The Long Man's roots might trace back to the Anglo-Saxon era – his profile bears resemblance to a design on a clasp unearthed in Kent in 1964 by archaeologist Sonia Chadwick Hawkes, likely depicting the deity Odin (or Woden); yet he could be a more recent addition to the landscape, intended to be admired from the priory. His shape mesmerized photographer Lee Miller and her spouse, artist Roland Penrose, residents near the Long Man. Penrose crafted a surreal depiction of the Long Man on the inglenook hearth at Farleys, their residence – to them, the figure embodied a guardian spirit. It also stirred the imagination of Black composer Avril Coleridge-Taylor, the folk ensemble the Memory Band, and Benjamin Britten, who enjoyed a meal at its base.
